Abstract

In a process for the preparation of chlorinated aryloxybutyric acids an aryloxybutyric acid is chlorinated in the molten state. Examples of acids prepared by the process are g -(2:4-dichlorophenoxy) - butyric and g - (2 - methyl - 4-chlorophenoxy)-butyric acids. Chlorinating agents specified are chlorine and sulphuryl chloride. The products may be purified by recrystallisation, e.g. from benzene. In an example g -phenoxybutyric acid is treated with chlorine until the weight of the reaction mixture has increased by an amount corresponding to the introduction of two nuclear substituent atoms.
