Abstract
The 17-acetate of cis-testosterone is prepared by reacting an alkali metal acetate with the 17-tosylate of trans-testosterone in the presence of a N-alkyl-disubstituted aliphatic carboxylic acid amide containing a total of up to 8 carbon atoms. The above process may be modified in that the 17-acetate of cis-testosterone is saponified to form cis-testosterone. Suitable amides are dimethylformamide and dimethylacetamide. The reaction may be carried out at elevated temperatures, e.g. at the boiling point of the reaction mixture. Potassium or sodium acetate may be used as the alkali metal acetate. One detailed example is given. 17-Tosylate of trans-testosterone is prepared by reacting testosterone and tosyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. Specification 822,205 is referred to.
