Abstract
The invention comprises compounds having the formulae <FORM:1004666/C2/1> <FORM:1004666/C2/2> <FORM:1004666/C2/3> where Alk is an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, X is iodine or bromine, Ac and Ac1 are acyl groups having 1-12 carbon atoms, R11 1-12 carbon atoms, and a process comprising (a) reacting 6b ,16a -dimethylpregnane-3b ,5a ,17a -triol-20-one 5-acetate with a solution of iodine to form the 21-iodo compound; (b) reacting the 21-iodo compound with an acylate salt to form the 21-acylate, (c) reacting the product of (b) with an oxidising agent to convert the 3-alcohol function to a 3-ketone function, and (d) heating the product of (c) to eliminate the 5a -acetoxyl group. As acylate salt there may be used trimethylammonium acylate and as oxidising agent, chromium trioxide may be employed. Elimination of the 5a -acetoxyl group may be effected under reflux in an alcoholic solution of strong acid. Specification 967,005 is referred to.
