Abstract
970,905. Thiophosphorus esters and intermediates therefor. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 7, 1961], No. 37551/62. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: in which R 1 and R 2 which may be the same or different are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicals attached directly to the phosphorus atom or through an oxygen atom and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom. They may be obtained by reacting an N-halomethyl-phthalazone with a salt of a phosphorus acid of the formula: HS.P(:X)(R 1 ) (R 2 ). Examples are given for the production of products of the above formula in which X is sulphur and R 1 and R 2 are each methyl, ethyl and propyl respectively, X is oxygen and R 1 and R 2 are each ethyl, X is sulphur R 1 is CH 3 or C 2 H 5 and R 2 is OC 2 H 5 , and X is sulphur and R 1 and R 2 are each C 2 H 5 . The products have insecticidal properties (see Division A5). N-chloromethylphthalazone is obtained by oxidising naphthalene with potassium permanganate and then treating the product with hydrazinium hydrogen sulphate (2N 2 H 4 .H 2 SO 4 ) to form phthalazone carboxylic acid heating the latter at 200-210‹C. to form phthalazone and either reacting the latter with formaldehyde to yield N-hydroxymethylphthalazone and treating the latter with thionyl chloride or reacting the phthalazone with paraformaldehyde in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid and then treating with thionyl chloride without isolation of an intermediate product.
