785,919. Valves; cooling and lubricating. N.S.U. WERKE AKT.-GES., and WANKEL, F. Jan. 18, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 1541/55. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) The driving shaft 3, Figs. 1 and 2, of a rotary valve 2 controlling the inlets and/or outlets of a pair of parallel cylinders 1 is coaxial with the valve and extends between the cylinders at an angle of between 15 and 45 degrees to the cylinder axes. In the four-stroke engine of Figs. 1 and 2, passages 7 and 12 in the valve control the intake and exhaust from the cylinder ports 9 but in a two-stroke engine the valve only controls the exhaust, the inlet ports being piston-controlled. The valve shaft 3 is driven by bevel gearing from an intermediate shaft 6 parallel to the crankshaft 14 and an extension 5 of the valve shaft drives coolant, lubricating oil, and lubricant return pump 11. The valve 2 may be cooled by liquid coolant supplied through the drive shaft 3 and removed through a coaxial shaft.
