Abstract

580,194. Two-stroke engines. GIBBIN, A. W. June 16, 1944, No. 11509. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine, in which a pair of cylinder blocks 13, 18, each containing at least two bores and rotating about an axis parallel to the bores but angularly disposed to the other axis, and pistons 23 in one block are coupled to pistons 24 in the other to produce reciprocation, means is provided for adjusting the compression ratio in some or all the cylinders. As shown, the blocks rotate about axes at right angles, the block 13 constituting a pump for combustible mixture which is admitted by a duct 11 and ports 16, 17, and after compression is transferred by a port 4 and passage 10 to the other block 18. The mixture is admitted to the power cylinders through a port 9, registering with ports 21 as the block rotates and the spent gases are exhausted through port 8 and duct 12. To vary the compression ratio the head of one or both cylinder blocks, or the blocks themselves, is displaced axially automatically, but subject to an overriding manual control, by fluid supplied by the pump cylinders, or mechanically by a screw 29 rotated in a nut 28 by toothed gearing 30, 31. The shaft of the screw bears on a ball thrust bearing 29a. The screw 29 may be coupled to the throttle valve so that the compression ratio is decreased as the throttle is opened. Firing in each cylinder in turn is effected by a sparking plug located in a socket 22, but the invention is also applicable to diesel or Hot-Bulb engines Fuel may be supplied by a jet to the transfer pipe 10. The bores may contain cylinder liners having limited lateral movement to acommodate thermal expansion. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 557,736.
