Abstract

776,485. Hoists. PUTZER, H. March 8, 1955 [May 11, 1954], No. 6814/55. Class 78 (5). Hoisting apparatus comprises a shaft 2 having a brake disc or ratchet 5 freely rotatable thereon, a brake plate 3 fixed to said shaft, a driving member 4 threaded on the shaft and adapted when rotated in one direction to advance along the shaft to trap the brake disc between the member and the plate and thus lock the plate to the shaft, stop means 9 limiting rotation of member 4 relatively to said shaft in the opposite direction, and means 12 for releasably holding the member relative to said shaft. As shown, the hoisting drum or pulley is geared to shaft 2, and handle (or hand wheel) 7 has a pawl 8 reversible to allow for the ascent or descent of the load cable operated by said drum or pulley. Oscillation of the handle drives member 4, which drives the shaft to raise the load and conversely, allows the shaft to turn to lower the load. When there is no load on the cable a sharp pull on the rope causes dog 12 to lodge in notch 15 to bind together the member 4 and shaft 2 so that ratchet 5 is free and a further pull on the rope unwinds it.
