Abstract

1,107,326. Spring drum winding mechanisms. R. L. AITKEN. 24 June, 1966 [27 July, 1965], No. 32148/65. Heading B8B. A spring-driven winding mechanism for a tagline to prevent twisting of a suspended load comprises a reel 1 connected to a stationary casing 7 by a coil spring 8, a friction brake 19, 20 for the reel 1 and means for applying a slipping and constant braking load to the reel 1 when it is turning to tension the spring 8. The reel is driven in the reverse direction by the spring 8 to wind in the tagline. The reel 1 is secured to a shaft 4 which is coupled at 10 to one end of the spring 8. The brake drum 20 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 4 and is connected thereto through a freewheel 35, 36 such that the drum 20 is driven only when the reel is paying out line and the spring 8 is being tensioned. Brake shoes mounted on the brake plate (19) are manually adjustable, Fig. 3 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the freewheel is replaced by a pawl and ratchet mechanism coupling the brake drum and the reel. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the coil spring comprises a flat coil spring mounted in the reel.
