Abstract

1,127,769. Winches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 2 Dec., 1965 [3 Dec., 1964], No. 49150/64. Heading B8B. A hoist including winding and storage drums 11, 26 for a cable 31 and cable guiding means 32 between the two drums, comprises a driving means for the drum 11 which means drives the storage drum 26 via gearing, at a speed greater than that of the drum 11, and a spring- loaded friction clutch 22, 23, 24 in the drive between the two drums to limit the tension in the cable 31 between the two drums. The winding drum 11 driven by an hydraulic motor 10 incorporates a gear 15 which meshes with gear 16 mounted in a housing 17 secured to the hoist supporting structure 18. The drive from gear 16 passes through a uni - directional pawl and ratchet 19, 20 to clutch plate and facing 22, 23 and through a second clutch plate 24 including a gear which meshes with a gear 25 on the storage drum. A compression spring 28 is selected to give a predetermined engaging force between the clutch plates whereby the tension in the cable 31 between the drums 11, 26 is limited prior to clutch slip. A brake 13 is provided between the winding drum 11 and sprindle 12 which when disengaged allows the drum 11 to pay out cable whereupon the pawl and ratchet 19, 20 freewheels. During cable pay out the storage drum 26 has a turning force applied to it by the cable 31 and this force has to overcome the clutch friction before drum rotation occurs, since the clutch plate 22 is held stationary, during pay out, by a uni-directional pawl and ratchet mechanism 29, 30.
