Abstract
A load balancing reel comprises a grooved drum 16 to which a torque is applied by a load on the cable 26, and interchangeable spring motors 83, 83A, 83B which act in parallel to oppose and balance the said torque. The drum 16 which is freely rotatable on a shaft 17, is conical such that as the cable 26 is payed out, the torque applied to the drum increases in proportion to the increased tension in the spring motors as the springs thereof are wound up. The motor 83 adjacent the drum 16 comprises a spring 138 having its inner end 136 connected to the shaft 17 via collars 132, 133 pinned to a stub shaft 123, which is in square peg engagement at 68 with the shaft 17. The outer end of the spring 138 is connected to the drum 16 via a spring retainer housing 116 and a hub 44. The outer end of the spring 138 is connected to the housing 116 via a pawl 143 pivoted on a shaft 118 of the housing. The spring 138 holds the pawl downwardly normally but if the spring 138 breaks, a coil spring on the shaft 118 moves the pawl 143 outwardly to engage ratchet teeth on the outer casing of the apparatus to arrest the drum 16 in the paying out direction. A star-wheel mechanism 71, 78 between the drum 16 and the apparatus casing limits the number of rotations which the drum 16 is permitted to make. Fine adjustment of the initial spring tension is effected by a manual worm drive adjuster 66, 63, 61 which rotates the shafts 17 and 123. Further spring motors 83A, 83B &c. are added in parallel to the motor 83 to facilitate the balancing of a large range of loads. An adjustable friction brake 56, 57, 58 is provided between the drum 16 and the apparatus casing. In another embodiment the inner end of the spring 138 is connected to the hub 44 and the outer end of the spring is secured to the apparatus casing 84.
