Abstract

1,177,663. Brakes. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 10 July, 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 31633/67. Heading F2E. [Also in Division B8] A powered hoist includes a Weston brake mechanism 30 in the drive between a motor shaft 21 and a sheave 18, the mechanism 30 including a ratchet wheel 37 which is caused to rotate therewith when a load is being raised or held, and a pawl 36 which is caused by frictional contact with rotating parts of the hoist to move into and out of engagement with the ratchet during lowering and raising of the load respectively. The pawl 36 is rotatably mounted on a sleeve 23 extending from the sheave 18, and is frictionally engaged therewith by a coil spring 40 urging the pawl against a washer 38 and retaining ring 39. The pawl engages a stop on the hoist when it is rotated out of engagement with the ratchet. The mechanism 30 includes a gear disc 29 driven by a gear 27 on a shaft 24 splined to the drive shaft 21, the disc 29 being threaded on to a shaft integral with a clutch disc 43 which through gears 34, 35 drives the sheave 18. The ratchet-wheel 37 is coaxially mounted to be gripped between the discs 29, 43 as they screw together during lifting of the load. With reversal of the drive shaft 21 and unthreading rotation of the disc 29, the load is lowered only when the grip on the ratchet-wheel 37 is released since the pawl 36 is in engagement with the ratchet.
