768,393. Flexible abrasives. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 24, 1954 [Dec. 28, 1953], No. 37406/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 60 [Also in Group VIII] A flexible abrasive material is formed by coating kraft paper with a strippable layer of polythene and applying thereover a rubbery binder comprising a rubber butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer, a phenol-aldehyde resin, ester gum, zinc oxide, salicylic acid, and dibutyl phthalate; tackifying with solvent the dried binder layer; laying thereon yarns of untwisted glass filaments; applying more rubbery binder to give equal weights of binder and filaments in the reinforced layer so formed; and, after partial curing to the non-tacky state and prior to or after removing the paper backing, applying thereto a phenolic resin binder and an abrasive grit such as silicon carbide, alumina, or garnet, either by mixing the two components or applying the grit on a coating of the binder, or by spreading a dry mixture of binder and grit on the filamentreinforced layer and heating to fuse the binder.
