Abstract

765,473. Feeding sheets. CRAMP, K. G. April 5, 1955 [Jan. 26, 1954] , No. 2319/54. Class 100(1) [Also in Group XL(b)] A paper folding and/or cutting machine is provided with one or more reciprocating grippers which is or are caused to grip and position a sheet of paper fed to the machine by known means and is or are then caused to release the paper in a required position for folding or cutting by means actuated by a solenoid which is rendered operative to effect release of the sheet when printed matter interrupts the light beam of a photo-electric cell, the solenoid being rendered operative to effect initial gripping of the sheet by a mechanically operated switch. The sheets of paper 1 are fed by the tapes 2 against adjustable stops 3 and are then displaced slightly by the gripper mechanism. The gripper mechanism comprises one or more grippers each having a lower finger 4 and a swingable finger 5, operated by a solenoid 19. The gripper mechanism is connected to a bar 6 which is reciprocated by means of a linkage 7, 8, the arm 8 being provided at its lower end with a slot 9 in which a driving shaft 10 operates, the shaft 10 being fitted with a cam 11 cooperating with a roller 12 so that the arm 8 may be moved against the influence of a spring 13. The shaft 10 also carries a cam disc 14 for reciprocating a rod 16 for opening and closing a switch 18. When sheet 1 is in position against the stops 3 the group of fingers are open and the gripper mechanism is moved towards the edge of the sheet. A switch 18 is then closed so as to operate the solenoid 19 thus closing the gripper fingers of the edge of the sheet. The gripper mechanism then moves in the opposite direction to displace the sheet of paper laterally. When a datum line or the edge of printed matter 20 on the sheet of paper 1 intercepts the light beam of a photo-electric cell 21 the photoelectric cell operates the solenoid 19 to open the gripper mechanism and release the sheet of paper.
