Abstract
745,778. Folding sheets &c. BROADBENT & SONS, Ltd., T., CRAN, W. B. G., IRELAND, A. A., PRITCHARD, H. K., and SPRECKLEY, F. March 11, 1954 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 2897/54. Class 42 (2). In a folding machine for laundry flatwork in which the leading edge of an article b, Fig. 1, moving on a conveyer a is gripped against a stationary bar i by a movable plate g which is raised by a solenoid h when the article has lifted a first switch arm c and moved a second switch arm f projecting through a slot in plate g, arm f is supported at k by plate g; thus when the latter is raised arm f is moved backwards so that its bottom end cannot interfere with the gripping of the article edge against bar i. Arms c, f control switches d, e respectively in the circuit of solenoid h. When the trailing edge of the article passes arm c, the solenoid circuit is broken and plate g falls to release the leading edge of the article; the rate of descent of plate g is controlled by a dashpot to avoid trapping the article against conveyer a. Instead of using a dashpot, the final descent of plate g may be restrained by a catch o, Fig. 6, which is normally clear of plate g but is moved to the position shown by a solenoid r controlled by a switch s which is closed when the folded article raises a feeler u or interrupts a light beam to a photo-cell; alternatively the feeler may be connected mechanically to catch o, or solenoid r may be energized for a predetermined time when switch arm c is raised.
