Abstract

484,018. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Dec. 19, 1936, No. 34963. [Class 100 (i)] In a sheet-feeding device of the kind in which the sheets are, one at a time, partly lifted from the top of the pack, stretched at the portion lifted, and forwarded in a direction parallel to the top of the pack, the operations of lifting, stretching, and forwarding of the sheets are effected by a single set of sheet grippers, e.g. suction grippers 1 each of which moves in a direction towards and away from the pack to lift the sheet, in a direction along the top of the pack to forward the sheet, and one of which is movable in a direction transverse to the feeding motion to stretch the sheet. The suction gripper 1 is mounted on a rod 9 carried by guides 10 on the arm 2 of a bellcrank lever which is operated by a cam 4 to move the gripper 1 to and from the pack. The gripper is moved longitudinally along the guides 10 by means of an oscillating bell-crank 3 operated by a cam 5 formed with a slotted end 12 embracing a pin 13 on the rod 9. A cam 16 on the lever 3 permits the gripper 1 to move outwards under the action of a spring 17 by permitting the rod 9 to turn on its axis owing to the movement of an arm 14 fitted with a roller 15 engaging the cam 16. The grippers may be moved backwards after gripping the sheet prior to the forwarding movement. The invention is especially applicable to stream feeders, and when the grippers operate at the rear edge of the pack the separation of the sheets may be assisted by combing wheels or bucklers, air blasts directed under the lifted edge of the sheet, and presser feet arranged to rest on top of the pack underneath the lifted sheet.
