Abstract

895,640. Cutting-machines. S. & S. CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO. Inc. Aug. 29, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 27843/58. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVI] A cutting and creasing press, such as described in Specification 772,648, has a gripping member for engaging the leading edge of a sheet which comprises a hollow slat 600, a plurality of spaced stationary jaws 602 carried by the slat, a plurality of complementary movable jaws 604 extending through the slat, and means operable within the slat to engage with a movable jaw to move it away from the stationary jaw. As shown in Fig. 2 each movable jaw 604 has a toothed end 603, is pivoted at 605, and is biased into sheet-gripping position by a spring 608. Bottom openings 613 are provided in slat 600 to allow extension 273 of jaw-operating system 270 (Figs. 3 and 4) access to upper jaws 604. Extension 273 is guided between posts 620 and is connected to a link 271, pivoted at 272 and in turn connected to link 275. Link 275 is reciprocated by a cam 282 acting on a further link 278 one end of which is connected to link 275, the other end being pivoted on a shaft 280. The link 278 is urged into contact with the cam 282 by a compression-spring 283. When the slat is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the extension 273 enters the opening 613 to raise the movable jaw 604 away from the fixed jaw 602 ready to grip a sheet 9. At the same time a further system of links 301, 305, also connected to the link 278 prevents the slat from rotating while the extension 273 is opening the gripper jaws. A similar jaw-operating system may be used to open the grippers at the sheet delivery position. A sheet stop-member 250, to position a sheet 9 with respect to jaws 602, 604, and sheet guide elements 253, 325 are also provided. The stop 250 is mounted on a member 251 pivoted at 252 and connected to link 310. Link 310 is connected to a link 313 pivoted on the shaft 280 and operated by a cam 320 against the action of a spring 314. Cams 320 and 282 are timed so that when system 270 maintains the jaws open the sheet is positioned against stop 250, as shown in Fig. 3. The sheet is then gripped and the stop 250 lowered as shown in Fig. 4.
