Abstract
764,347. Travelling grates. RILEY STOKER CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1955 [March 19, 1954], No. 1059/55. Class 51 (1). A travelling grate comprises an endless link belt, a driven sprocket around which said belt passes, a series of grate bars each pivotedly connected at one edge to said belt and having its opposite edge engaging the surface of the immediately adjacent bar in slidable contact, and a yieldable pivoted shoe holding said bars in sliding contact with each other as they pass around said sprocket. The travelling grate shown comprises sprocket wheels 23, 24 mounted in pairs on axles 25, 27, respectively. The drive to the grate is imparted through shaft 27 and the grate bars 10 are carried at their ends by endless chains passing over the sprockets and comprising links 46 arranged in pairs (see Fig. 5). The links are pivotally connected by pins 47, each pin mounting between links a sprocket-engageable roller 55. Each bar 10 is pivotally secured to the chains by pins 47 and left and right-hand members 56, 49. For this purpose, each bar is formed with a longitudinal flange 48 (see Figs. 4 and 5) and longitudinal and transverse flanges 53, 51 at each end, the thickness of flanges 48, 53, being such that the latter may be accommodated in channel 58 in member 56 whilst the former may be housed in a similar channel in the right-hand member. In securing a bar to the chains it is placed in a nearly inverted position such that the compartments formed on the underside at each end of the bar by the flanges 48, 51, 53 enclose a pin 47 already provided with its associated members 56, 49. The bar is then pushed into position the flanges 48, 53, sliding into the channels in the members. Cotter pins 60 are then pushed through holes such as 59 and notches such as 63, 64, to secure the bar in position. Pivoted shoe members 32 resiliently yieldable through weights 36 ensure that the grate bars do not swing apart whilst passing round the sprocket 24 whilst a rail 30 keeps the bars in contact throughout a substantial part of their return passage beneath the grate.
