761,046. Moulding artificial limbs. AIRSCREW CO. & JICWOOD, Ltd. Sept. 18, 1953 (Sept. 19, 1952], No. 23556/52. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VI] A form-retaining hollow body is made by applying fibrous fabric to a former, impregnating the fabric, before during or after application to the former, with an adhesive, covering the layer thus formed with a closely fitting elastic sheath and, when the adhesive has set, removing the former. An artificial leg is made on a former comprising a wood or paper core b covered by a layer a of plaster of Paris. A sheet c of fibre glass is cut to the required shape and wrapped round the former. The sheet c is impregnated with a suitable synthetic resin liquid e.g. phenolic resin. A thin elastic sheath d in the form of a footless nylon stocking is then applied by rolling, over the impregnated fibre glass, wrinkles being removed by a smoothing action. After drying the core b is removed and the plaster of Paris a broken up and removed. A former made entirely of wood may be used. More than one layer of fibrous fabric may be applied to the former. Specification 148,994 [Class 81(ii)] is.referred to.
