Abstract

760,703. Fuel supply systems. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Oct. 13, 1954 [Oct. 13, 1953], No. 28114/53. Class 7 (3). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In a fuel supply system having two or more pumps 26 .... 28 in parallel supplying fuel in excess of engine requirements and a by-pass 34 for returning excess fuel to the supply side 22, all the pumps except one are provided with a branch passage 36, 37 leading from the delivery side to the supply side 22 and having a servo-operated valve 38, 39, therein controlled by a flow-responsive valve 35 in the by-pass 34. Fuel is drawn from a tank 21 by three gear pumps 26 .... 28 in parallel which deliver through non-return valves 29 .... 31, to a metering device 32 from which excess fuel is returned to the low pressure side of the pumps through the by-pass 34 containing a spring- loaded flow responsive valve 35 having a flow restriction 12a therein. The branches 36, 37 are normally closed by valves 38, 39, actuated by spring-loaded pistons in cylinders 40, 41, connected to the pipe 34 through passages 44, 45 containing restrictions 46, 47. When the engine fuel requirements are high, e.g. at low altitude, the valve 35 is moved towards the right to open passages 43, 42 to prevent pressure build up in the cylinders 40, 41 whereby the valves 38, 39, are moved to the left to close the by-passes 36, 37. As the engine fuel requirements decrease, e.g. at increasing altitude, the increased flow through the by-pass 34 moves the valve 35 to the left until the passage 42 is blocked, whereupon pressure builds up in the cylinder 40 and the valve 38 is opened to by-pass the delivery of the pump 27 back to the supply side of the system. On further decrease in engine fuel requirements the valve 35 moves further to the left to block the passage 43 causing the valve 39 to open and by-pass the delivery of pump 28. If there is a further decrease, the valve 35 opens a by-pass 11a. A fuel system containing only two gear pumps in parallel is also described.
