Abstract
679,583. Gas turbine plant. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and CAREY, F. H. April 18, 1951 [April 19, 1950], No. 9653/50. Class 110(iii) [Also in Groups XI, XXVIII and XXIX] A continuous combustion gas turbine fuel system comprising an engine driven fuel pump supplying fuel to the burners through a starting valve and an accumulator connected to the fuel delivery line upstream of the valve, has an independently driven lowpressure pump connected t o the downstream side of the starting valve through a conduit provided with a valve which is controlled by a movable element of the accumulator so that it is open during charging and closed during discharging of the accumulator. An engine driven fuel pump 11 receives fuel from an independently driven low pressure pump 12 mounted in a fuel tank 13. The pump 11 discharges through a starting valve 16 to the burner manifold 15. An accumulator 19, connected to the delivery line 14 upstream of the valve 16, is combined with a valve 21 which controls the flow along conduit 22 from the pump 12 to the downstream side of the starting valve 16. When the pump 11 rotates during the starting of the engine it delivers fuel along the line as far as the starting valve 16 and charges the accumulator 19. Movement of the piston 25 of the accumulator against the action of the spring 27 causes a valve 32 to open the connection between the inlet and outlet ports 28, 29. This allows fuel to flow into the manifold 15. The build up of pressure from the pump 11 acting on the element 17 will eventually unseat the valve and this is timed to occur approximately simultaneously with the booster pump 12 filling the space around the inlet port 18. This arrangement allows the valve 17 to unseat without a resultant fall in pressure before the valve which would cause it to close again. A non-return valve 23 is provided to prevent return flow to the pump 12 when the pressure in the manifold 15 exceeds the pump discharge pressure.
