Abstract

582,035. Burners. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and IFIELD, R. J. July 7, 1944, No. 13029. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI, XXVII and XXVIII] A device for insertion in the fuel supply of internal-combustion prime movers, for example, jet propulsion engines, to increase the fuel supplied at starting comprises a body member a having a bore b c of two diameters and a spring-loaded, stepped piston q slidable in the bore under the action of fuel supplied under pressure to the small part of the bore, passages connecting an inlet h to the small part of the bore and a delivery connection i to the large part of the bore and a control valve m movable at will to different positions for establishing and interrupting communication between the delivery connection and the larger part of the bore and means forestablishing communication between the said passages under the control of the fuel pressure acting on the piston. Fuel from the pump entering at the inlet h forces the piston against the action of a spring s and delivers fuel from the large end of the bore to the delivery connection i and thus to the engine. When the piston reaches the end of its travel ports v are uncovered and the fuel flows directly from the inlet h fo the connection i. The sump connection j is connected to the fuel tank and fuel is drawn in through a non- return valve p on the down stroke of the piston. Passage x in the piston is to equalize the pressures on both sides of the large end of the piston when in the lower position. In a modified form the fuel first flows to a lightly loaded bye-pass valve which closes when a slight pressure builds up. The fuel then flows to the small end of the piston and discharges fuel to the engine from the large end of the bore. When the pressure rises still further another bye-pass valve opens and the fuel flows directly to the engine. A control valve for stopping the engine and a throttle valve for controlling the flow into the device are provided. The throttle valve has a small bye-pass for fuel for slow running of the engine.
