Abstract

1,162,494. Fuel injection pumps. C.A.V. Ltd. March 1, 1967 [March 22, 1966], No. 12494/66. Heading F1A. In a fuel injection pump a shuttle piston 17 is moved in a bore 14 by liquid pressurized by pistons 12, to discharge fuel to an outlet 15 connecting successively with discharge parts 16, each of which may be fitted with a pressure relieving valve 31; alternatively a single relieving valve may be fitted in the bore 14 or outlet 15, flow from a feed pump 13 to the bore at opposite ends of the shuttle is proportioned by a throttle valve 30. The stroke of the shuttle is limited by a stop 19. In the embodiment shown the shuttle has a circumferential port which at a given point communicates with spill ports 20 at which injection ceases; when the shuttle engages the stop 19 pressure in the actuating end of the bore 14 is relieved through a spring-loaded valve 23 to the ports 20. In a further embodiment there is no connection between the injection end of the shuttle and the circumferential port so that injection is terminated when the shuttle engages the stop 19. In a further embodiment the valve 23 may be replaced by a valve mechanically actuated by engagement with the stop 19. The valve 23 may be replaced by a valve communicating directly with the bore 14 or in one of the plungers 12.
