Abstract

790,007. Fluid-pressure servo motor-control systems. HOLLEY CARBURETOR CO. July 21, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 21099/55. Class 135. A valve in the fuel supply system of an internal combustion engine comprises a movable valve member 16 controlling inlet ports 18 and having piston portions 19, 20 movable in pressure chambers 34, 35 communicating through a pair of restricted passages 53, 54 in the valve member, with outlet ports 55, 56 opening adjacent each other and differentially controlled by outlet valves operated by a member 46 movable in accordance with variations in engine speed and having a limited lost-motion connection with the valve member so that the member 46 exercises some control over the valve member in the absence of fluid pressure in the chambers 34, 35. The valve member 16 slides in a fixed cylindrical casing with outlet ports 17 and inlet ports 18, the latter being controlled by the piston portion 20 which has control recesses 21. A positive displacement pump 12 drawing from a source of fuel 10 supplies the valve through a passage 11. The valve 16 discharges to the burners through a passage 13. The pressure drop between the passages 11, 13 is maintained constant by a spring-loaded relief valve 24 the closed end of which is subject to the pressure in the passage 13 through a passage 33. The pressure chambers 34, 35 are continuously supplied with fuel under pressure through passages 36, 38 having restricted orifices therein. The valve member 16 has an extension 47 passing out of the valve cylinder into a lowpressure chamber 48 into which the ports 55, 56 open. The member 46 is formed with a collar 45 and is movable against a spring 66 by governor weights 42 supported on an enginedriven shaft 40. One end of the member or shaft 46 co-operates with the port 55 in the manner of a valve. A bell-crank lever 49 is pivoted to the shaft 46 and to the extension 47 and has an arm 57 co-operating with the other port 56 so that as one of the ports is closed the other is opened. The loading of the spring 66 is adjusted manually by a lever 60 acting through a cam 59 and a bell-crank lever 61 on a spring abutment 65.
