Abstract

949,842. Fuel injection pumps. C.A.V. Ltd. Nov. 6, 1961 [Aug. 9, 1960], No. 4505/60. Heading F1A. A fuel injection pump 50 is fed through a manual or governor controlled throttle 63 by a supply pump 61 with a pass valve 62 and the back pressure at the pump inlet 60 is kept constant by a shuttle 66 loaded by fuel substantially at the desired back pressure. The pump 61 is fed by a lift pump 61a and the rear side of shuttle 66 is connected to the intake of pump 61. The injection pump 50 has camoperated pistons 54 carried by a rotor 51 with inlet passage 59 and a delivery passage 57 which delivers to circumferentially spaced ports 58 connected to fuel injectors. The pump 61 is arranged on the injection pump shaft and the valve 63 is situated in the pump body. In the drawing of the Provisional Specification the injection pump pistons 5 actuate a free piston 16 which delivers the feed through outlets 11 and the pump delivery is controlled by varying the supply through passages 13, 9, to the working chambers of the piston 16 and the pistons 5 by means of a manually controlled throttle 29. The supply pump has spring-controlled valves 22, 33, in a by-pass m, the valve 21 serving to apportion the feed supply between the by-pass and the delivery line to the throttle 29. The rear side of the shuttle 28 which maintains constant back pressure at the pump inlet 13 is connected to the pipe j between the by-pass valves 21, 23, to which the pipe 9 is also connected through a passage 29b in the throttle 29. At a predetermined speed the pressure in pipe j acting beneath throttle 29 raises the throttle to reduce the pump delivery and govern the engine speed.
