To knit the heel of a stocking blank, integrally with foot and leg, the central group of needles holding instep fabric is idled, holding the last-knitted loops and each heel tab is knitted on needles a, b, c, &c. of adjacent groups (active needles indicated by crosses) the newly formed loops (with the exception of the most inward or a few of the most inward of them) being periodically transferred outwardly by at least one needle space, stripping at least one of the needles (indicated by a circle) or spreading its loop over the next outwardly adjacent needle, each or at least one of such inward needles (indicated by asterisk) thereafter holding its loop and joining the inactive group, whilst the other needles of the active group, including the stripped needle, take yarn and knit, the heel selvedge being subsequently shaped by reducing the number of wales (as by the use of peaking blades or by narrowing) and all the loop-holding needles being finally restored to activity and loops of the initial course y<SP>1</SP>, y, y<SP>3</SP> of the foot drawn. Before the selvedge shaping, the outward loop transfer is accompanied by periodic increase in yarn carrier traverse. Needles inactivated at the inner edges of the heel tabs may be temporarily restored to activity (course 9 of Fig. 3). Needles may be rendered inactive when holding two loops. When peaking blades are used, fashioning marks 13, Fig. 8, are produced and each heel tab ends in linking courses 15 and roving courses 16. If outward loop transfer is suspended and the transfer points are used for narrowing, fashioning marks 13, Fig. 9, are produced and the selvedge edges may be seamed together right round the heel.
