Abstract

649,776. Knitting. QUORTEX, Ltd., and CHAPMAN, J. H. Oct. 15, 1947, No. 27601. [Class 74 (ii)] A method of forming heel parts of a stocking blank consists, whilst continuing to knit on the instep needles, in first progressively widening the blank by loop transference, initially on a comparatively large group of needles extending inwardly from the normal selvedge and thereafter on groups of needles of substantially the same size but located at progressively increasing distances outwardly from the inner end of the first group then, after said widening, progressively narrowing the blank by loop transference on a comparatively small group of needles extending inwardly from the selvedge of the last widened course and, during said narrowing, forming marking stitches (e.g. eyelet holes along lines B, C ; B<SP>1</SP>, Cl) by needles at the junction of that large group of needles last to be employed during widening and the remaining needles. The widening produces panels A, B, D, F ; A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>1</SP> Fl and rows of eyelet holes A, B ; A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>. The number of needles narrowing is progressively reduced, by outwardly rocking the narrowing boxes one needle per course until all the needles of the group have been stripped, the final narrowing course coinciding substantially with the last course of the heel proper. Thereafter, the thread carrier is racked in to G, G<SP>1</SP> and, during formation of the foot panel 3, ravelling courses 4 are knitted. After removal of the ravelling courses, the ends G, E and G<SP>1</SP>, El of the heel parts are linked together and the stocking is completed in the normal way.
