Abstract

558,301. Knitting. BLACKBURN & SONS. Ltd., G., START, H. W., and START, E. July 21, 1942, Nos. 10218/42 and 7527/43. [Class 74 (ii)] The heel parts of a blank knitted upon a straight-bar machine are formed by transferring loops outwardly at each side of the blank by a set of points comprising two groups A, B operated so that the inner group A transfers outwardly one needle and the outer group B transfers outwardly two needles, and subsequently narrowing. The formation of large eyelet holes is thus obviated, The outer group of each set may comprise a number of points so that the holes b forming the transfer markings are, as shown in Fig. 1, spaced the usual distance from the back seam, and the inner group may comprise a single point. Alternatively each group may consist of a single point so that the holes may be formed near the selvedge and disposed in the seam so as to be invisible. A spade or mask E may be arranged to shield a number of points in each of the outer group B so that narrowings may be formed at the selvedge during the widening motions. The points used may be those employed for shaping the toe, and a spade H may be provided for shielding all but one point in each of the inner groups A. Specification 484,998 is referred to.
