Abstract

544,171. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. Jan. 17, 1941, No. 694. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to the knitting of a ribbed seamless stocking in which the ribs extend through heel, toe and foot bottom, and the heel and toe are made by reciprocation. The invention is described as performed on a machine with two superposed rotary needle cylinders. If a broad rib is knitted then three ribs on each side of the stocking need to be interrupted at the heel and toe sutures. The needles forming these ribs are transferred from the upper to the lower cylinder one or two courses before the sutures are formed. After fashioning is completed, these needles are restored to the upper cylinder and rotary knitting to form the foot is resumed. The machine is provided with doubleended latch needles mounted in sliders 52, 54. The upper sliders carry knitting butts 58 and two, or three sets of transfer butts 56, 57. The lower sliders carry knitting butts 62 and two, or three transfer butts 60, 61. Specifications 24290/12, 220,355, [both in Class 74 (ii)], 400,623, 450,417, 451,057, and 532,577, are referred to.
