Abstract

576,662. Knitting. BERRIDGE & CO., Ltd., I. L., and COLTON, L. H. Nov. 6, 1943, No. 18457. [Class 74 (ii)] A full-fashioned stocking blank made upon a straight-bar machine has a heel portion at each side formed with a suture a f extending from the end of the instep to a position short of the selvedge. Knitting is discontinued on the instep needles and knitting proceeds on a gradually lessening number of needles, the inoperative needles holding their loops; subsequently the heel needles are gradually introduced and finally the heel and instep needles all knit. An additional suture may be formed by reducing the number of heel needles knitting from k to o, increasing the number from o to m, again decreasing from m to l, and finally increasing from l to k when the instep needles also are introduced. A toe having a suture p, q may be formed on the instep needles, by reducing and subsequently increasing the number of needles knitting, the heel needles holding their loops. The appearance of the suture may be varied by knitting two plain corners upon all the needles immediately following the course at which fewest instep needles knit. Alternatively the suture "holes" may be filled in by forming tuck stitches upon needles as they are brought into operation. Sole narrowings 2a may be provided. A divided needle bar or presser bar may be provided so that the instep needles can be withheld from knitting during the formation of the heel parts and the heel needles 10 are restrained from pressing by instruments 17 depending from brackets 18 which can be racked as desired parallel to the needle bed and can be moved downwards to bring the instruments into engagement with the needle heads to push the needles away from the presser bar 12. The thread carried is controlled to give the desired shape of heel parts.
