The first few courses of the welt of a stocking knitted on a straight-bar machine are knitted of a curly crepe yarn and the remainder of the stocking is knitted of an uncreped yarn, with the result that the loops transferred from the welt hooks to the needles after turning the welt contract to provide a smooth join with the transfer sourse, and to remove the possibility of the otherwise long transfer loops being caught.
