A filing cabinet comprises a frame with a rearwardly sloping open front with a stepped rack therein for cards, tickets or the like and transversely arranged removable partition pieces supported in the sides of the frame to divide the accommodation into pockets which can be varied in size, the partitions forming the back and front of the pockets. The frame a of the cabinet is made from sheet metal, and viewed from the side, is of triangular shape with the open front forming the hypoteneuse, the rack b being secured therein parallel to the front edges, and either the frame sides or members e secured thereto have notches or grooves f to receive the end edges of partition pieces d which separate the record cards c into groups. As shown in Fig. 3, the rack b may be made from rubber or like material having a large number of small steps b<SP>1</SP> so that the cards c within a group are also stepped up and additional partition pieces h<SP>1</SP> may be used as an index. As shown in Figs. 4 and 7, the rack b may be made from sheet metal pieces shaped to form steps b<SP>1</SP>, each step accommodating a group of cards c, preferably each step bs being slightly inclined to the horizontal to displace the upper edges of the cards slightly for manipulation. The partition pieces d may have a central or other cut out portion and similarly the index partitions h<SP>1</SP>, the cut away parts being staggered. As shown in Fig. 7, the partition may be in the form of a pocket d<SP>1</SP>, the back portion of which engages with the grooves f and has a shoulder d2 resting on the edge of the adjacent step b<SP>1</SP>. The pocket partition d<SP>1</SP> will hold a group of cards c at a level between the groups of cards on the step below and the step on which it rests. A number of racks may be arranged side by side in a single cabinet. The edges of the frame a may carry an index holder g in the form of a metal strip along an edge. A door or slidable cover may be provided for the open front of the frame.
