In a file indexing arrangement for drawings or like sheets superposed in horizontal position in a drawer having an index rail at the front thereof, a plurality of index strips, detachably and exchangeably held by said index rail and carrying alphabetical inscriptions, are arranged in alphabetical order and receive reference numerals corresponding to the numerals on tabs projecting from the drawings. Separate index strips 11 are maintained in slanting position in the index rail 10 by wedge-shaped end members 12 or perforated sheets of separably connected index strips are provided guided in transparent covers arranged side by side in an index rail. Index rails 10 are mounted on the front wall 5 of the drawer, the front wall being hinged to the base thereof, or in the case of an openfronted drawer, horizontal and inclined index rails are fixedly or slidably mounted on the base of the drawer. An additional index rail mounted on arms 14 pivoted to the side walls of the drawer, rests on the top of the drawings contained in the drawer. An abutment device 51 rotatably mounted by means of sleeves 52, co-operates with tabs 58 on the drawings to locate them in position and is held in the vertical position by locking bent end portions 53 behind lugs 54. Additional tabs 56 engage in a recess 57 in the side wall 55 of the drawer, to prevent drawings smaller than the drawer being displaced toward the rear thereof, the tabs 56 being accommodated between inner and outer side walls 55, 59. Alternatively, the drawings are located in the drawer by abutment plates 74, Fig. 5 (not shown), rotatably mounted on vertical spindles at each side of the drawer, each plate being held in the open or closed position by a pin 76 depending therefrom and engaging in one of two holes in the base of the drawer, the plate being raised against the action of a spring to disengage the pin from the hole and permit rotation of the plate about said spindle. In a further embodiment, the drawer is subdivided by transverse and longitudinal walls into four compartments, each compartment being provided with an additional index rail resting on top of the drawings, which is rotatably mounted on arms pivoted to the compartment and has abutments at each end extending normally therefrom to engage the drawings at each side, Fig. 3 (not shown), and locate them in position.
