A medicinal mist producer includes a phial 10 for the liquid to be atomised with an outlet 18 in its side wall, an atomising tube 13 from which atomised liquid is discharged radially outwards against a baffle sleeve 12, and means for varying the distance between an outlet opening 21 in the baffle sleeve and a precipitation surface 20 opposite that opening. In this manner the maximum particle size emitted from the outlet 18 is varied. The device is mounted on a frame 21, and the baffle sleeve may be slightly rotated relative to the phial and atomising tube by a knob 29. The undersurfaces of the rims 16, 17 of the baffle sleeve and a head part 14 respectively are part-spherical, and engage frusto-conical surfaces of the phial and sleeve. The part 14 includes a gas connector 24 which, by means of a pivoted clamping device 47, is held within a bush 33 to which an atomising gas supply is fed. The connector 24 depresses a valve 36 to allow the flow of gas through passages 22 and 27, and liquid is drawn up bores 28 and sprayed radially outwards. Tapered notches 48, 49, Fig. 5, formed in the lower ends of the baffle outlet 25 and tube 13 increase the space for the liquid to drain down into the phial when the sleeve is turned into a coarse mist position.
