Class 39(1) A set of electrodes for use in an open arc lamp in which the electrodes 9, 10, Fig. 1, are arranged substantially in alignment and are clamped with their rear ends in conductive holders 11, 12, preferably of copper, and have their active ends opposite each other and spaced at a predetermined distance apart, the electrodes including their conductive holders being in the form of an integral and interchangeable unit, is characterized in that the unit is provided with an insulated coupling member 14 for the holders extending longitudinally of the electrodes and bridging the space between their active ends. Each of the holders 11, 12 is turned up at its lower end to embrace an electrode. The coupling member 14, which may be made of mica, has connected to it a rigid metal wire 17 which, at its upper end, is bent into the shape of an eye 18. A conductive bridging member 15 of graphite is provided between the facing ends of the electrodes 9 and 10. The arc lamp casing 1 with reflector 2 is provided with guides for the set of electrodes comprising two parallel channel-shaped conductive rails 3a and 3b closed at their lower ends 19, 20 and secured to an insulated body 4 having mounted thereon a funnel-shaped inlet member 5 for the insertion of the set of electrodes. Current supplying terminals are provided at 6 and 7. The set of electrodes can comprise two or more pairs of electrodes 9, 10, 22 as shown in Fig. 3 in which the electrode holders 11, 12, 21 are riveted at 23 to the coupling member 14.
