Abstract

714,979. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 15, 1952 [Sept 28, 1951], No. 20532/52. Class 38(5) A circuit breaker has an arc chute comprising spaced magnetic plates 44 and spaced insulating plates 85, the two sets of plates being arranged along two sides of an arcing space 18. In one form, Fig. 1, the plates 44 are arranged on the left-hand side of the space 18, the contact 12 moving in a slot 57 in a plate 17 enclosing the space. The arc 101 is attracted into slots 46 in the plates 44 and rises info slots in magnetic extensions 41 of the insulating plates 85. An exhaust chimney 102 is arranged behind the plates 44. In a modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), magnetic plates 44 are arranged on the left and right-hand sides of space 18 and the insulating plates at the top have no magnetic extensions. The right-hand plates 44 of this arrangement may be omitted, Fig. 24 (not shown).
