Abstract
666,941. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 13, 1950. [Feb. 23, 1949] No. 908/50. Class 38 (v). The interrupting capacity of an air-break switch having an arc-chute is increased by reducing the cross-sectional area of the exhaust gas path towards the end of the chute, the reduction being stated to compensate for the reduced volume of the gas as'it cools and thus maintain its high velocity. On separation of the arcing contacts 11, 12 the arc rises on to terminal members 18, 19 putting into circuit a series blow-out coil 3 whereby it is driven upwardly along staggered tapering slots 40 in plates 29 of a refractory insulating material. The plates 29 are spaced by lengths of asbestos rope 35, the distance A at the exhaust end of the chute being less than the distance B at the entrance. The reduction in cross-sectional area may alternatively, or additionally, be produced by utilising plates 29 whose thickness increases towards the exhaust end, Fig. 4 (not shown).
