Abstract

552,774. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 22, 1941, No. 13580. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] A "deion" structure comprises insulating end plates 35, 37 united by two pairs of insulating side plates 39, 41, the plates 41 being lined with arc-resistant material 45, 43 between the latter of which the arcing contacts 25, 27 separate. The arc is transferred to horns 49, 55 by a series magnetic blow-out coil 59 and side plates 65, 75, and thence to arcing plates 47, 53. During this movement the arc enters the tapering slots 69 in spaced parallel plates 67, preferably of non-gas forming insulating material, the slots being alternately to one side or the other of the vertical centre-line of the plates. The structure comprising plates 67 is in two parts separated by a chimney 79 located just above the point of contact-separation so as to allow escape of the initially-formed arc gases, the chimney being formed over barriers 81 to prevent intermingling of the arc gases rising from the top of the two parts of the plate structure. The effect of the chimney is additionally to force the arc to loop at 82 into the chimney, so stabilizing the arcposition at that point and obtaining a more even distribution of the arc throughout the structurelength.
