Abstract
687,886. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1950 [Dec. 10, 1949], No. 29089/50. Class 38 (v) In a switch having one or more arcing spaces bordered by plate-like barriers, each barrier has one or more slots arranged transversely to the arc path to prevent the forming of a conducting, path between the switch contacts when the surface of the barrier is heated to a high temperature by a heavy current arc. The Figures show the invention applied to the structure of Specification 589,277 in which moving contacts 11 co-operate with fixed contacts 14 in slots 21 formed between adjacent barrier plates 22 ... 24. Each barrier plate has a series of parallel slots 26 ... 29 extending transversely to the path of the adjacent arc drawn when the contacts separate, the slots being of sufficient length to extend across the high-temperature region adjacent the arc. Each plate has laterallyprojecting bosses 30, 31 which act as spacers and shroud clamping through-bolts 32, 33. Outer solid barrier plates 41, 42 enclose spaces 43, 44, which enable expansion of the arc gases through the slots 26 ... 29 in the end barrier plates 22, 24 and provide for increased turbulence of the gases as in the above Specification. A muffler 58, which may be that of Specification 687,897 may be provided to cool the arc gases, which are finally vented through a wire screen 61.
