Abstract

689,955. Arc-rupturing in switches. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 23, 1951 [Oct. 2, 1950], No. 19888/51. Class 38 (v) A switch has an arc chute 25 with a plurality of spaced fins or plates having serrations, notches or slots along their edges traversed by the arc. In Fig. 1 the switch has a fixed main contact 13, a tertiary contact 14, an arcing contact 15, a moving contact 16, arc runners 29, 30 and a magnetic blow-out structure comprising a coil 28, a core 26 and poles indicated at 27. The arc chute may have insulating side walls 31, 32, Fig. 3, with projecting fins 33, 34 which are tapered and interleaved as shown to provide a tortuous arc passage, the notches 36 being provided in the tapered edges. In Fig. 7 the projecting fins 42 abut and tapered notched plates 44 are interposed so as to provide a tortuous arc passage. Fig. 11 shows a barrier plate 50 having a V-shaped slot which has rectangular notches 52. Alternatively, these notches 52 may be round-bottomed, Fig. 12 (not shown). In a further arrangement, Fig. 13, the arc chute may have fins 57, 58 which are spaced apart so as to provide an arc passage 61 extending through the chute, the passage 61 having rectangular notches 63 as shown, or round-bottomed notches, Fig. 14 (not shown), saw tooth notches, Fig. 17 (not shown), or inclined upstream or downstream extending notches, Fig. 18 and 19 (not shown). A barrier plate having a number of notched slots is illustrated in Fig. 16 (not shown). It is stated that the arc chute may have groups of plates or fins which are identical or may comprise any combination of the plates described.
