Abstract
711,287. Roads; floors; roofs. WALLER, J. H. DE W. May 19, 1952 [May 25, 1951], No. 12333/51. Class 20 (4) In laying concrete roads, floors, roofs &c. and particularly in forming waveform arched shells or flexible shuttering as described in Specifications 545,334, 666,495 and 680,294, sealed joints are produced at predetermined positions such as along the crest line of a waveform structure by disposing a weakening member in the form of a rope of fibrous material extending vertically and horizontally between the two faces of the concrete of such length as to ensure cracking of the concrete in the vertical plane the crack being sealed by the form or nature of the member. In one construction at every second or third crest 1 of a waveform structure a rope 3 is laid on the first coat of concrete and a second coat then applied followed by a final coat. Alternatively the rope may lie adjacent either surface. As setting and maturing proceed cracks B form and moisture penetrating to the rope causes it to swell and seal the crack. The Provisional Specification describes the use of rubber or copper strips in place of the rope.
