Abstract
694,863. Cable sheaths. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., WOOLDRIDGE, J., and RAINE, P. A. Aug. 27, 1951 [June 9, 1950], No. 14459/60. Class 36. The metal sheathing of a cable is protected against corrosion by means of a layer of synthetic resin, applied in liquid or semi-liquid form at normal temperature and subsequently gelled by heating. A thermoplastic resin such as polyvinyl chloride is preferably used and reinforcing textile or glass fibres may be incor. porated therein. The layer may be applied to the metal sheath by spraying or by passing the cable through a bath of thermoplastic resin compounded to a paste, and then through a suitably shaped die. A reinforcing strip of the same resin may be wound helically over the paste. The cable is then passed through a bath of heated oil or through an oven to gel the resin. Alternatively the cable may be passed through a bath to receive one or more coatings of a prepared latex, the cable being passed through a drying oven after each coating, and the coatings finally gelled as above. An outer coating of bitumen reinforced with a fibrous material may be applied over the resin layer.
