Abstract
650,654. Insulated conductors. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 16, 1948, No. 32593. Convention date, Jan. 14. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36] An electric conductor is insulated with glass yarn and a superposed coating of polytetrafluoroethylene or a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and another polymerizable organic compound containing an ethylenic double bond. The copolymer may be the reaction product of 50-85 per cent tetrafluoroethylene and 50-15 per cent ethylene. The conductor is first covered with two wrappings of glass yarn, one having the opposite lay to the other, and is then coated with a liquid composition containing the polymeric material. The coating is heated to a temperature of at least 621‹ F. to cause the coating to coalesce and adhere to the glass wrappings. The conductor may be given an initial coating of polymeric material, which is heated to cause it to adhere to the conductor and to coalesce, prior to the application of the glass yarn and the outer coating.
