700,177. Coating materials in indefinite lengths. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd. Aug. 9, 1951 [Aug. 31, 1950], No. 21492/50. Class 140 Metal-sheathed electric cable is provided with an overall waterproof and corrosion resistant layer by passing the cable while in a heated condition through a vessel in which it is brought into contact with a thermoplastic material in a cold, finely-divided form, and controlling the speed of movement of the cable, its temperature, or both, so as to render the thermoplastic material plastic and adherent to the surface of the metallic sheath. As shown, a lead-covered cable C issuing from the die D of a lead-press P passes centrally through a rotating box B containing polythene powder where the cable which is still hot receives a coating of polythene. The coated cable is passed through a wiper W, which may consist of brushes, through a heated chamber A and if desired a cooling device L, e.g. an air blast, and is wound up at T. The thermoplastic material may be shellac or the synthetic rubber sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Thiokol." When the metal sheath is composed of a tape or tapes applied longitudinally or helically, it may be heated by an induced current. Alternatively the cold, thermoplastic powder may be applied by stationary or revolving spray guns.
