693,887. Gravity switches; mercury switches. GOLDSWORTHY, E. G., and MAUNDER, H. T. Jan. 10, 1952, No. 753/52. Class 38 (v) An automatic safety switch for an electric fire comprises an evacuated glass tube 14 containing mercury 16 which co-operates with contacts 17 sealed into the sides of the tube, the tube being mounted in spring clips 12 fitted to the base of a metal case 9, which is hermetically sealed and packed with asbestos to protect the tube from damage due to shock or heat. The contacts 17 are connected by leads 18 to terminals 1. When the fire to which the switch is secured is overturned, the mercury flows away from the contacts 17 and the circuit between the terminals 1 is interrupted.
