Abstract
1,197,108. Thermal switches. FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT PTY. Ltd. 16 July, 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 33911/68. Heading H1N. A heat-actuated contact unit for a fire alarm system comprises a diaphragm 15, Fig. 2, between two air tight chambers A, B and arranged to close an electrical circuit between contacts 11, 12 under a pressure differential between the chambers A, B due to a fast rise of ambient temperature but which is also operable by a spring 20 released by low melting point solder 24 on a heat transfer cap 18 forming the chamber B. The diaphragm 15 is soldered on a metal sleeve insert 13 which is secured by adhesive together with the cap 18 in a recess of the base 1. In the example one terminal contact 11 engages the sleeve 13 which a second terminal contact 12 is engaged by the diaphragm 15 to close the circuit. The diaphragm 15 may have a plug of low melting point solder for venting between the chambers A and B at higher temperatures when the diaphragm is actuated by the spring 20. In a modification the diaphragm moves a spring arm contact into engagement with a fixed contact.
