Abstract
430,253. Mercury switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, LUCAS, G. S. C., 75, Eastlands Road, and MAYO, C. G., 17, Alexandra Road, both in Rugby. Dec. 15, 1933, No. 35375. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury thread cut-out comprises an hermetically sealed U- tube 1 formed with a capillary portion 2 in each limb and containing mercury 3 above which is a vacuum or an inert gas. Electrodes 4 are sealed into the ends of the limbs of the tube and an electrode 5 is sealed into the bend of the tube. In use, the electrode 5 and one of the electrodes 4 are connected in circuit so that on overload the mercury thread in the capillary 2 volatilizes to break the thread and break the circuit. To re-establish the circuit the other electrode 4 is connected in circuit and when the corresponding mercury thread is ruptured on overload, the movement of mercury serves to reset the previously ruptured thread in the other limb. In a modification, only one limb of the U-tube has a capillary portion. The other limb is merely a mercury reservoir and contains a plunger of magnetic material which may be operated by an outside coil to reset the thread.
