Abstract
437,650. Mercury switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, LUCAS, G. S. C., 75, Eastlands Road, and MAYO, C. G., 17, Alexandra Road, both in Rugby. May 2, 1934, No. 13286. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury thread cut-out comprises a capillary aperture 2 in a block of steatite or other material 1, the aperture containing mercury and communicating with bodies of mercury 7, 6 connected to leads 8, 9 and the whole being enclosed in an exhausted envelope. Below the mercury 6 is a metal block 4 with a capillary aperture 5 and after the cut-out has operated, the mercury thread is reformed by tapping the device when mercury will descend from the body 7, and any gas or vapour in the tube 2 will be forced out at the lower end, a small quantity of mercury preceding it and collecting at the bottom. The top half of the cut-out may also be made similar to the bottom half so that when the mercury 7 has been exhausted the cut-out may be reversed in its holder and operated thus.
