Abstract
671,375. Joisting pipes to plates. PARSONS, & CO., Ltd., C. A., and ILIFFE, C. E. June 9, 1950 [March 10, 1949], No. 6593/49. Class 99 (i). [Also in Group XIII] In a heat exchanger of the tube-in-shell type (see Group XIII), the tubes 9 extend between tube plates 10 which are drilled to receive gland packings 11. The ends of the tubes are reduced in diameter and extend through holes in cover plates 14 which are secured to the ends 8 of the shell by studs 16 and nuts. Neck rings 12 and springs 13 or Belleville washers are inserted between a tube plate 10 and a cover plate 14 to retain the packings 11 in position. The springs 13 may be replaced by screwed ferrules. A tubesupporting shoulder may be provided on the neck rings 12 or on the cover plates 14. When tubes are to be withdrawn, the end covers 14 and springs 13 are removed and by means of a flat plate 25, Fig. 8, the tube plate 10 is moved forward by drawbolts 26 so that the gland packings clear the full diameter end portions of the tubes. The plate 25 and drawbolts are removed and any individual tube may then be withdrawn.
