Abstract

656,833. Helicopters. STALKER, E. A. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30797. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1945. [Class 4] In order to allow a helicopter rotor to operate at an advance ratio greater than unity, i.e. with a translational velocity (Va) exceeding the blade tip peripheral speed (Vp), the blades are automatically adjusted about their spanwise axes during rotation to ensure that positive lift is generated by each blade when retreating. As shown, each blade 3 carries a trailing edge flap 12, the angles of incidence #, #, of the blade and flap respectively being varied during each revolution in accordance with the curves 14, 16 shown in Fig. 10. The pitch control mechanism comprises ring cams 31, 50, Figs. 14 and 15, operating the blades and flaps through links 32, 52 respectively. Adjustment of the contour of the cams may be effected by radially-movable plates 60 provided with appropriately shaped slots 62, 64, the plates 60 being operated by a ring 67 moved vertically by a screw rod 69 and connected to the plates by arms 66. The disc 65 carrying the plates 60 is mounted on a balljoint 72, about which it may be tilted in any direction ; the plate may also be moved vertically by a rod 78.
