Abstract
1391940 Helicopter rotor blade UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 29 June 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 30379/72 Heading B7W A helicopter rotor blade has a tip portion 20 having negative twist which changes non- linearly, see Fig. 2, a thickness of between 6 and 10% of chord dimension, and a camber whose maximum occurs forward of the 50% chord station. The tip portion may be of constant chord, or may have trapezoidal portion, Fig. 4, or may have pivotally mounted tabs (50, 54), Fig. 25 (not shown), for changing between the two configurations. Alternatively, Fig. 19, the tip portion may be swept back so that the centre of lift of the tip portion is aft of the blade elastic axis, the centre of gravity being kept on or forward of the axis by balance weight 90 accommodated in a forward swept part of the leading edge. The tip portion 20 may have the aerofoil cross-section specified in patent Specification 1,391,939. This blade is stated to have reduced tip stall, blade-out-of-track instability and noise.
